RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) – A hunter is facing charges of baiting deer and aiming his rifle at game wardens.
David Grandchamp, 50 of West Rutland, has been cited to appear in court on charges of reckless endangerment, hunting deer over bait and salt, and failing to mark his blind with his name and address.
Fish and Wildlife officials say two game wardens were responding to a tip that a person was hunting deer using bait and salt in a field, when they said the hunter, while watching them, aimed his rifle in their direction.
“Mr. Grandchamp was standing outside his blind while scoping the wardens in what appeared to be an attempt to intimidate them to leave the area,” said head game warden Col. Robert Rooks
Grandchamp admits putting out a salt lick but denies hunting deer with it or pointing his rifle at the game wardens, a charge that he said was issued a week later.
If convicted, he faces up to year and 60 days in jail, $2,500 in fines and the loss of his hunting and fishing licenses for three years, state officials said.
