BOSTON (AP) – A former foster mother has been sentenced to eight to 12 years in state prison for the death of a 4-year-old boy she was caring for.

Corinne Stephen of Boston was accused of causing the death of Dontel Jeffers during the 10 days he was in her care in 2005.

Stephen was charged with second-degree murder, but a Suffolk Superior Court jury convicted her in November on the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter.

Prosecutors told the jury that Stephen was responsible for the boy’s death or stood by as other people hurt him and refused to seek medical help.

The boy’s injuries included a blow to his stomach that caused a lethal infection.

Stephen’s lawyer has said he’ll likely appeal the conviction.
