WOODSTOCK, N.H. (AP) – This summer’s New Hampshire vacation by French President Nicolas Sarkozy has prompted more interest in the state from his countrymen.
Sarkozy’s visit was highlighted by the international media, focusing attention on New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. It looks like many French residents want to see it for themselves.
Jayne O’Connor, president of White Mountain Attractions, says they have seen an increase in vacation inquiries from France. The organization represents 16 tourism spots in the region.
“We were fortunate that President Sarkozy chose to come to this part of New England and showed the world that it is a great destination for anyone, whether they’re a world leader or not,” O’Connor said.
Overall, it looks like New Hampshire’s summer tourist season will end up being pretty good.
O’Connor said the summer season was better than they thought it would be in the middle of July. She said May and June started with a bang, thanks to beautiful weather and a good economy. She said the wet weather around the Fourth of July put a damper on the whole month, but things picked up this month.
Tourist spots are hoping for a big turnout this weekend, as Labor Day closes out the summer season.
“Most of our attractions are feeling that they had a pretty good summer,” OConnor said, “but were not expecting any records to be set.”
