NEWMARKET, N.H. (AP) – Nine children were injured when a pickup truck they were riding in plunged into a gravel pit.

Authorities said two adults were in the cab of the truck and nine children between the ages of 6 and 15 were in the back when it crashed Sunday night.

Fire Chief Rick Malasky said the accident happened on a farm that soon will be sold at auction.

“They were taking one last ride in the back of the property, and they entered the gravel pit where there used to be a driveway. Apparently, the driveway was excavated and they didn’t realize it. So instead of a hill, it was more like a 10- to 12-foot cliff,” Malasky said.

The children were either thrown from the truck or slammed into the rear window. Six of them were hospitalized.
