AMHERST, N.H. (AP) – A seventh-grader from Amherst Middle School has died on a field trip to the White Mountains.
The school says McKayla Geisinger of Mont Vernon died Monday night. She was attending a school program at the Appalachian Mountain Club lodge at Pinkham Notch, home of Mount Washington. There is no word on the cause of death. An AMC spokesman said the child collapsed at the lodge.
Rob Burbank, the spokesman, said the students had broken into small groups for a guided, two-mile snowshoe hike to look for animal tracks and explore the base of the mountain.
“The girl was going into the lodge and she collapsed,” Burbank said. “They were practically done.”
The students were scheduled to spend two nights there.
The rest of the class was coming home Tuesday by bus. Counselors were available at the school to meet with students.
The school’s seventh grade attends the environmental program each year, spending three nights in AMC huts and working with the AMC on outdoor programs.
