PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) – A Rhode Island man was in court on Wednesday to face charges that he raped a woman he met through an online dating system.
Joseph Silva, 31, of East Providence, is accused of raping a woman in Portsmouth during a date in August that they arranged through an online dating service.
Silva turned himself in to police. In Portsmouth District Court, prosecutor Susan Boone said authorities believe Silva slipped the woman a date-rape drug, which combined with alcohol, left the woman unable to resist an assault.
Silva’s bail was set at $25,000; he’s scheduled to be back in court on Dec. 8.
Police say they believe there will be more charges.
“There were repeated assaults on that evening, and he even continued to try to contact her after that night,” Boone said.
