MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) – A century ago, the mile-long Amoskeag mills along the Merrimack River cranked out more cloth than any other textile complex in the world.
On Wednesday, the historic mills were reborn in a massive LEGO replica, unveiled at the SEE Science Center.
Here are some facts about the display:
• It stretches 2,200 feet.
• It contains 3 million LEGO bricks.
• It took LEGO fans, young and old, about 10,000 man hours to build over two years.
• Positioned within the display are 8,000 LEGO figures, representing the 8,000 employees who worked there at the millyard’s height. Look for the bank robbers.
• The replica is built to a 55:1 scale.
• It recreates the steel arches of the Notre Dame bridge, now gone.
• It recreates a section of Elm Street, including City Hall.
• Real water flows where the old canals once ran through the millyards.
• Little trains run along miniature tracks within the display.
• It features a Ferris wheel, roller coaster and carousel in a recreation of Pine Island Park.
• The permanent exhibit can be viewed during regular science center hours, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
