BELLOWS FALLS, Vt. (AP) – A building housing a restaurant that’s been central to the revitalization of Bellows Falls was heavily damaged by fire over the weekend.

There were no injuries reported, but firefighters say the building housing Oona’s Restaurant and two other storefronts was badly damaged in a blaze that raged for hours.

The first report of a fire was called in to the Bellows Falls Fire Department at 10:24 p.m., according to an incident report released by Fire Chief William Weston. It was almost 3 a.m. before firefighters were able to declare the fire under control, he said.

The “fire was very difficult to extinguish due to the age of the building,” the report said, although it did not say what year the building was built. There also were no interior breaks inside the structure that are designed to prevent fires from spreading between walls and floors, according to the report.

Oona’s is a restaurant that opens onto the Bellows Falls Square, which has attracted shoppers and diners into the central business district and helped to propel other revitalization in the village.

A dispatcher at the fire department said the chief had fought the fire all night and was not available Sunday afternoon.

A preliminary estimate put damage at $200,000.
