PARIS — The Paris Hill Historical Society will welcome Martha McNamara, director of New England Arts & Architecture at Wellesley College, speaking about the life and art of Pedro Tovookan Parris.
The event will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, at the First Baptist Church of Paris, 500 Paris Hill Road, Paris Hill. It will include a 45-minute talk and visual presentation with a 15-minute question and answer session. A reception in the church hall will follow.
Admission is free, however donations are gratefully accepted for the historical society’s programs and maintenance of archives and collections.
Pedro Tovookan (1833 – 1860) was a former slave, artist and public speaker whose 19th century journey took him from East Africa to Paris Hill. McNamara is authoring an extensive book on his life and its historical context. She will present her knowledge and research.
McNamara is an art and architectural historian who specializes in the visual and material culture of New England. She is director of the New England Arts and Architecture Program and co-director of the Architecture Program in the Department of Art at Wellesley College.
