FALMOUTH — Even on her worst day of the tournament Shannon Johnson was the best player in the field.

Johnson, of Norton, Massachusetts, had the lowest score of the day in Wednesday’s final round to win the New England Women’s Amateur golf championship at The Woodlands Club.

Shooting over-par for the first time all tournament was still enough for Johnson to beat runner-up Hannah Ghelfi by five strokes. Johnson carded a 2-over 74 to finish at 2-under 214 for the three-day tournament. Ghelfi played 54 holes at 3-over to earn runner-up status for the second year in a row.

Sophie DiPetrillo was third at 13-over for the tournament. Bailey Plourde, of Newcastle, shot a final-round 77 (the third-best round of the day) to finish as the highest Maine native, in ninth. Plourde improved every day after a first-round 87 and finished the tournament at +28.

Heidi Haylock, of Turner, finished in 37th with a three-day score of 268 and was the highest-placing local player. She shot a final-round 86 after carding scores of 91 each of the first two rounds.
