UPDATE: Two in critical condition after two-car collision in Mechanic Falls
MECHANIC FALLS — Ambulances took several people from the site of a two-vehicle collision Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of North Main and Bucknam streets. The extent of the injuries was not known.
Four ambulances and a LifeFlight helicopter were sent to the intersection at about 3:40 p.m.
One man who lives near the crash site said he was told the victims included a teenage boy, his mother and three children, who had been riding in the backseat of one of the automobiles.
Mechanic Falls police, Maine State Police and deputies from the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office were at the scene Wednesday afternoon. A reconstruction was planned as an investigation into the accident got underway.
The Lifeflight helicopter was able to land in a field near the intersection, according to a witness. It was not clear how many victims were flown from the scene. Some were taken by ambulance to Lewiston hospitals.
At the crash scene, an SUV and a sedan showed extensive damage, and debris, including a pair of sneakers, was strewn across both roads.
No further information on the victims was available Wednesday night.
Police closed sections of North Main and Bucknam streets, and were expected to be at the scene into Wednesday night.
Bucknam Street connects North Main and Marshall streets.
