BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) – A Canadian woman suspected of killing her 8-year-old son – whose body was found in Lake Champlain – remained hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday with self-inflicted wounds but has yet to be charged.
Louise Desnoyers, 48, of Montreal, Quebec, is under police guard at Fletcher Allen Health Care hospital, where she is being treated for wounds suffered in a suicide attempt. Once her condition improves, she is expected to be charged with murder and arraigned in court, according to Grand Isle State’s Attorney David Miller.
Police said Desnoyers, who was despondent over recent marital problems, was found Tuesday morning in a shed on the island.
Officials would not disclose any details about her injuries. Miller said she likely would not have survived such injuries five years ago, but he wouldn’t elaborate.
The boy was last seen alive Monday night when he and his mother entered the United States at Rouses Point, N.Y.
“She’s going to have to recover enough so she can get in on her own power,” said Grand Isle State’s Attorney David Miller.
Police divers found the body of Nicholas Desnoyers-Langlois in shallow water Tuesday night near Isle La Motte, an island just south of the Canadian border.
An autopsy is planned for Thursday.
