ALTON, N.H. (AP) – A man who came to Lake Winnipesaukee to announce his engagement remained missing Monday afternoon as the search continued for a second day.

Frederick Surette, 51, of Raymond, disappeared Sunday while swimming in choppy water off Rattlesnake Island in Alton.

Family members say Surette came to the lake to tell his brother he had just gotten engaged. He and his fiancee, Muriel Murphy, got into trouble in the rough water. Surette made a “heroic effort,” pushing Murphy toward the boat before disappearing, Fish and Game Sgt. Jim Juneau said.

The bodies of two other people who drowned during the weekend were recovered. Derek McGovern, 32, of Boston, also drowned while swimming in choppy water in Lake Winnipesaukee, authorities said. They said he jumped in from a friend’s boat Saturday evening. His body was recovered Sunday afternoon about a quarter-mile from Varney Point in Gilford.

“In windy conditions, it’s really easy for someone to get pushed away from the boat,” Juneau said.

The third drowning was in Goffstown, where the body of 43-year-old Anita Bergeron was found Sunday morning in the Piscataquog River near her home. She was last seen Saturday evening.
