100 years ago: 1918
Lewiston Democratic City Committee will meet within a few days to decide what course will be taken to fill the vacancy on the Legislative slate caused by the resignation of George A. Murphy, following the Ward 3 mix-up in which the recount was widely at variance with the informal inspection of ballots. It was learned Friday by the Lewiston Journal that Napoleon Coulombe was opposed in his desire to get on the ballot. The difference in votes between Coulombe and Napoleon Bolduc, a member of the present Legislature was but eight, according to those that kept a tally at the recount. It is understood that Mr. Bolduc will exert what influence he has to get a place on the ticket.
50 Years Ago: 1968
Androscoggin County’s been on a line budget since the 1950s, and successful as it’s been that all the state’s 16 counties are now on the system, using the system patterned after Androscoggin. Today there was proof of the value of the system as Country Treasurer Harriet M. Simpson, responding to a query from the Journal for mid-year financial figures, produced a report that the county officers will have to be proud of. Androscoggin County is holding the line in its expenditures for the first six months of the year. The Simpson report shows that the county is running well within the line — that $426.09 was appropriated at the beginning of the year, the second year of the biennium, and at the end of June about half, or $204.31, had been spent.
