AUBURN — Mary Gionet, 85, of Hanover passed away Sunday, Aug. 5, at the Hospice House in Auburn, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Lewiston on Dec. 19, 1932, the only child of Stephen E. and Ellen (McGillicuddy) Owens.
Mary was educated in Lewiston schools and was a graduate of Lewiston High School, Class of 1950. Following graduation, she worked in the office of Hall & Knight Hardware Co.
She married George B. Gionet in St. Joseph’s Church in Lewiston on Nov. 23, 1957. George was in the Navy and on the day that they were married, Mary and George drove across country to San Diego, Calif., and lived there for two years.
When George was honorably discharged from the Navy, they drove back to Maine, bought a home and settled in Hanover where they raised their four sons.
Mary was a communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior and was a member of the choir for 25 years. In her younger years, Mary enjoyed cross-country skiing with her husband George. She also enjoyed family gatherings, cooking for the holidays, sewing and traveling. Besides crossing the country twice, they made many trips to Canada. Their most memorable trip was to Rome and the Holy Land.
Surviving are her four sons: Stephen E. Gionet and wife, Linda, of Galveston, Texas, Michael G. Gionet Sr. and wife, Nancy, of Bethel, Mark J. Gionet of Lewiston and Timothy P. Gionet and wife, Kay, of Sabattus; a sister-in-law, Claire Walker, of Poland Spring; two cousins, Maryanne LaPlante and husband, Norm, of Sabattus and Constance McGillicuddy of Lewiston; eight grandchildren: Kelly Jones and husband, Roy, of Lewiston, Michael Gionet Jr. and wife, Kristina, of Wisconsin, Heather Benson and husband, David, of Florida, Curtis Gionet and wife, Amanda, of Florida, Scott Harrelson and wife, Crystal, of North Carolina, Heather Harrelson of South Carolina, Brandon Tong of Texas and Adam Tong and wife, Katina, of Texas; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband, George; sister-in-law, Mary E. Politis; and two brothers-in-law, J. Gerry Walker and Anthony F. Politis Sr.
