OLD TOWN — In a physical battle, the Dirigo Cougars defeated Old Town Coyotes 15-14 in the football season-opener for both teams Friday night.
After the Coyotes jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the second quarter, Dirigo started to chip away at the deficit in the third quarter. Alex Gorham put the Cougars on the board with a 4-yard run.
Gorham picked up his second touchdown with three minutes to go when the Cougars blocked a punt at the Old Town goal line, and Gorham pounced on the loose ball in the end zone. The Cougars converted on the two-point conversion when quarterback Cole Brown found Cameron Kidder in the end zone.
Mountain Valley 35, Poland 0
RUMFORD — Jacob Blanchard ran for two touchdowns to lead to the Mountain Valley football team to a 35-0 victory over Poland on Friday night.
Blanchard’s first touchdown was a 25-yard scamper that gave the Falcons a 6-0 lead. He added an 80-yard TD run in the second quarter. Quarterback Dylan Desroches threw for two touchdowns — Keegan Davis caught a 38-yard pass in the second quarter, while Will Bean caught a 51-yard pass.
Both Desroches and Bean forced turnovers. Desroches had an interception on Poland’s opening drive, and Bean recovered a fumble. The fumble set up a Jesper Turner’s 62-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.
Justin Karcher kicked a 25-yard field goal in the third quarter.
Field hockey
Mountain Valley 7, Boothbay 1
BOOTHBAY — Rylee Sevigny had a pair of goals to lead six scorers for the Falcons as they easily got by the Seahawks at Boothbay Harbor.
Avery Sevigny, Alana Young, Faith Riddicke, Autumn Fryeman and Are Burgess each had goals for Mountain Valley.
Cortney Meader was the goal scorer for Boothbay off an assist from Chloe Arsenault.
Abby Gavin and Nora Tag combined for three saves for the Falcons, while Maddy Barter stopped nine shots for the Seahawks.
Spruce Mountain 10, Telstar 0
JAY — Emily Castonguay and Auri Armandi led a group of eight players to record goals as Spruce Mountain cruised to a 10-0 victory over Telstar in field hockey action Friday.
Castonguay and Armandi led the Phoenix (2-0) with two goals each. Emily White, Erin McPherson, Isabell Castonguay, Brook Buote, Hanni Johnson and Avery Williams also tallied to complete the scoring.
Melissa Bamford and Jayden Acorn combined to make four saves for Spruce Mountain, while Perry Morton turned aside 11 shots between the posts for Telstar (0-2).
Winthrop 7, Oak Hill 0
WINTHROP — Maddie Perkins scored four goals and had an assist to lead the Ramblers to a season-opening victory over the Raiders on Friday.
Katie Perkins, Kerrigan Anuszewski and Hannah Dooley each tallied goals for Winthrop (1-0), while Bre Feeney had two assists.
Oak Hill falls to 1-1.
Dirigo 6, Lisbon 0
LISBON — Sophie Jacques compiled five goals to lead Dirigo to a 6-0 victory over Lisbon in field hockey action Friday evening.
The Cougars led 4-0 at the half. Three of Jacques goals were unassisted. Kailey Hackett rounded out the scoring for Dirigo with a goal and two assists.
Goalies Becky Budesheim and Courtney Sargent combined for 12 saves for the Greyhounds in the losing effort.
Boys’ soccer
NYA 5, Poland 0
YARMOUTH — Ryan Baker scored twice to lead the Panthers in Friday’s win.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead on Baker’s first goal at the 24-minute mark. Cameron Goodrich and Xander Kostelnik then scored to make it 3-0 at halftime.
Alasdair Swett added a goal in the second half, and Baker made it 5-0 in the 60th minute.
Samson Shen had two saves for NYA.
Oak Hill 3, Lisbon 1
LISBON — Oak Hill scored a pair of goals in the second half Friday to pull out a 3-1 boys’ soccer victory over Lisbon.
Nico Soucy scored on a penatly kick to give the Raiders (1-0) a 1-0 lead in the first frame. Caleb Leighton and Zac Ouellette tallied after the break to seal the win. DJ Douglass scored the Greyhounds’ (0-1) lone goal.
Cole Whitten made five saves for Oak Hill, while Levi Levesque and Sean Moore combined to deflect seven shots for Lisbon.
Mt. Abram 3 Monmouth 1
SALEM — Tyson Hill received a pass from Kenyon Pillsbury and scored from 12 yards out to cement a 3-1 victory for Mt. Abram over Monmouth in boys’ soccer action Friday.
The Roadrunners jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first half. In the sixth minute, there was a miscommunication between the Mustangs’ goalkeeper and one of his defenders that enabled freshman Cam Walters to redirect the ball past him for an early 1-0 lead.
At the nine-minute mark, JB Jordan sprinted past the Monmouth defenders and drilled a shot off the diving goalie’s hands for a 2-0 lead. Monmouth got on the board with 19 minutes left in the first half when a Mt. Abram defender tried to clear the ball, but it went right to Hayden Fletcher’s feet, who then hit a shot past Mt. Abram goalkeeper Jack Deming.
Mt Abram held the advantage in shots 13-7 and corners 2-0.
Girls’ soccer
Monmouth 11, Mountain Valley 0
MONMOUTH — Audrey Fletcher netted four goals and Alicen Borham and Abbie Crawford added two apiece as Monmouth rolled to a 11-0 victory over Mountain Valley in an early-season girls’ soccer tilt Friday.
Bre Smith, Jordyn Gowell, Olivia Sirois and Megan Ham also tallied for the Mustangs to complete the scoring.
Destiny Clough made two saves for Monmouth, while Taylor Henry and Lilly White combined to deflect 23 shots for the Falcons.
Poland 4, Fryeburg 1
POLAND — Leya Harvey registered a hat trick Friday to propel Poland to a 4-1 girls’ soccer victory over Fryeburg.
Allie Ferland also tallied for the Knights (1-0) to complete the scoring. Sharlah MaeDay scored for Fryeburg to prevent a shutout.
Sophie Vallee made eight saves for Poland, while Morgan Fusco turned aside 23 shots between the posts for Fryeburg.
