LEWISTON – Senior citizens may be eligible for more public assistance than they currently claim.
SeniorsPlus and AARP have launched a campaign to alert seniors in Franklin, Oxford and Androscoggin counties of the changes, which affect people 60 years old and older.
The eligibility income limits have recently changed, so people who were not previously eligible may be eligible now. And those currently receiving some benefits may be eligible for more.
The new guidelines affect those who are single and have incomes below $2,245 per month and couples with incomes of less than $3,030 per month.
SeniorsPlus and AARP can help those seniors receive income to which they might be entitled. This money could help seniors pay for prescription drugs or health insurance premiums or buy food, among other things.
SeniorsPlus is the designated Area Agency on Aging for Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties. The agency is a private nonprofit supported by funds from the Department of Human Services, the Bureau of Elder and Adult Services, area United Way Agencies, local municipalities, the generosity of private donors and the dedication of volunteers. Since 1972, SeniorsPlus has provided information and services to older citizens.
