Lewiston Middle School students have the opportunity to participate in the X-treme Typing Challenge. This program promotes and challenges middle school students to learn to type properly using the “touch typing” method.
Students’ Apple iBooks are pre-loaded with the UltraKey typing program which allows the students to learn to type correctly by practicing in their spare time. Once the students feel they have practiced enough to pass the first test, they make an appointment for a testing session. If the student passes, they receive a certificate and the opportunity to keep building their skills through practice and subsequent tests. The ultimate goal is to have students tying 40 words per minute with 90 percent accuracy.
Prizes are also offered to students as incentive. After the students successfully complete their first test, they are given a certificate and a $1 coupon toward a snack in the cafeteria. After successful completion of the second test, a gold seal for their certificate and an x-treme Typing Challenge t-shirt is given and after the third, students will receive another gold seal and two free tickets to Flagship Cinemas. Their name will also be entered for a grand prize at the end of the school quarter.
Parents are asked to become involved with the X-treme Typing Challenge by encouraging their LMS student to participate. Students that have a computer at home with Internet access can practice their typing skills at http://learn2type.com. In fact, with parent involvement, learning to type can be a fun activity for the whole family on these cold winter nights.
Although participation in the Challenge Is not mandatory. It is a great opportunity for LMS students to learn a valuable skill that will give them an advantage over middle school students elsewhere in the United States. Are you up for an LMS X-treme challenge?
