NEWRY û A meeting Tuesday morning with an Anson paver, prompted selectmen to pursue a bid process for this summer’s road project.
Despite having already solicited quotes from Commercial Paving Co., Inc., of Scarborough, and local contractor D.A. Wilson and Co. of Bethel, and getting town meeting voter approval to raise the quoted $384,000, the board met with Bruce A. Manzer, Inc., of Anson.
After listening to Manzer describe his asphalt milling and paving process, ôwe agreed to rethink the Skiway Road Project set for this summer,ö said Chairman Stephen Wight.
The project involves a complete reconstruction of a one-mile stretch of the heavily traveled Skiway Road between Sunday River Inn and Sunday River Ski Rekkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkksort’s South Ridge Base Area.
The ski resort also had a hand in inducing selectmen to put the project to bid by offering the services of their engineer, Joseph Aloisio. Wight said the board took that offer, asking Aloisio to put together a bid package for the roadwork.
Wight said that because the board had yet to sign a contract, they could still go through a formal bid process to learn if the project can be done for less than $384,000.
In other business, Fire Chief Gary Wight and Deputy Chief Bruce Pierce told the board that they had purchased a used 1989 ambulance from Bethel for $2,001. Plans are to use it as a squad vehicle to carry firefighting equipment.
Gary Wight and Pierce also displayed the Firemen’s Ski Race trophy that Newry firefighters recently won by outracing Bethel firefighters down Sunday River ski slopes by half a second, Stephen Wight said.
The race involves five firefighters skiing down the course while holding a fire hose.
