Leavitt Institute in Turner opens on Oct. 1st.  The double-session plan will be used, there is an intermission of an hour and a quarter at noon and school closing at 3:30 in the afternoon. Two buildings have been leased to take the place of the old dormitory until a new one can be built The place known as the Orcutt house will serve as a dining room for boys and girls. Philip Dearborn takes the place of the former sub-master, Leslie Dunham. Mr. Dunham was drafted and so was Mr. Dearborn, but the latter was rejected. Mr. Dearborn has had successful experience as a teacher at Opportunity Farm in New Gloucester and as principal of the high school in Stratton. 

 

The Auburn Fire Department dispatched Engine Five to the city dump on Gracelawn Road at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday to wet down an area that was smoldering as a result of fire there last Friday. Firemen spent about an hour and a half at the scene. 

 

Agriculture Secretary Mike Espy has approved a $3 million Rural Development Administration to help build a new 90-bed veterans’ nursing home here, Senate Majority Leader George J. Mitchell announced Friday. Mitchell said he urged Espy to approve the project in a recent telephone conversation. The RDA state and regional offices had recommended approval of the project to provide the financing necessary to build the home. Workers broke ground for the $7 million dollar project on High Street on Sept. 19. “Secretary Espy expressed to me his personal support for the home in South Paris. I am pleased that the secretary has recognized the importance of this project,” Mitchell said. The low-interest RDA loan will save Maine taxpayers thousands of dollars for the construction of the new home, according to the senator. “In my discussions with the secretary, I stressed the real need for this facility. Almost 19,000 veterans live within a 25-mile radius of its future High Street location. They and others will greatly from the high-quality, long-term care this state-of-the-art facility will provide.”
