AUBURN — Hazel Marie Rand, 81, died peacefully Monday, Sept. 17, at Clover Healthcare in Auburn.

Hazel was born in Hallowell on Nov. 10, 1936, to Norman and Louise Gray as the youngest of five children. She was the loving wife of the late Rev. Robert L. Rand and his partner in ministry in the United Methodist churches he served throughout New England. She was co-director of Camp Mechuwana in Winthrop with him, while also serving as United Methodist Conference youth coordinator. She taught in public schools, most recently English at Maranacook Community School in Readfield, and was instrumental in starting and promoting Project Graduation.

Hazel spent a number of years in retirement traveling with her husband across the U.S., playing in community bands and settling in Honolulu where she continued her work with the United Methodist Church, the American Association of University Women and as a volunteer in elderly care at the Good Samaritan Society-Pohai Nani.

Survivors include her son, Robert C. Rand, and his wife, Phyllis, of Lewiston; her son, John Rand, and his partner, Florence A. Milazzo, of Hawaii; her “favorite grandson,” Danny Rand, of Portland; her “favorite granddaughter,” Linda Rand, of North Attleboro, Mass.; extended family and a wide circle of friends.

Hazel’s family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, Dr. Thomas Hattan, MD, and staff at Clover Healthcare for their gentle caring for Hazel during her long illness.

A celebration of Hazel’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at Calvary United Methodist Church, 59 Sabattus St.
