DEAR SUN SPOTS: We have a Ridgeway grandfather clock in need of cleaning and possibly minor repairs. Is there anyone in the Oxford Hills or surrounding areas that would make a house call to look at the clock? As a last resort, it could be transported to a shop. Thanks.
— No name, no town
ANSWER: I have Ken Rice of Tic-n-Time on Route 302 in North Windham (207-892-1263) in my Rolodex as well as Rohman Clockworks at 350 Minot Ave. in Auburn (207-784-1211) and Harry Hepburn in Harrison (207-583-2821). Both Rohman Clockworks and Harry make house calls. Harry also has drop-off and pickup spots for smaller clocks in Gray, Wiscasset and Windham if you can’t get to his shop in Harrison. Harry says he has been repairing clocks since 1968 and he is the president of the Maine Chapter of the National Watch & Clock Association. I was unable to contact Ken, but just contact him if you want to see about house calls.
If anyone has another recommendation, please send it in! If you own a clock repair business, please write in.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have two air casts that I no longer need. Is there any place that takes used medical supplies and refurbishes them for those who can’t afford them in the Lewiston-Auburn area?
— No name, Auburn
ANSWER: Both SeniorsPlus (207-795-4010) at 8 Falcon Road in Lewiston and Freeport Community Center (207-865-3985 ext. 202) at 53 Depot Road are two locations that take donations of all small durable medical equipment in good condition such as your air casts, walkers, canes, bedside commodes, shower chairs and regular wheelchairs with foot platforms.
They do not take larger items such as hospital beds, recliners and motorized wheelchairs because of limited storage but SeniorsPlus will connect you with individuals who have the need for these items.
If you are a person in need of borrowing small medical equipment such as the items mentioned above, call these non-profits. Readers, if you know of any other organizations that take in these items, please let me know!
