100 Years Ago: 1918
 
Hundreds of tons of steel were fired by the big American guns, northwest of Verdun, in the direction of the railroad centers of Conflans, Longuyon, Montmedy and other points today in cooperation with the infantry attack west of the Meuse. The guns began firing early in the morning and kept up their bombardment all day. It was as said to have been the busiest day that the guns have had. 
 
50 Years Ago: 1968
 
Democratic Presidential hopeful Hubert H. Humphrey handily defeated the Republican candidate Richard M. Nixon by better than a four to one margin in a mock election held yesterday at Lewiston High. School. Humphrey tallied 467 votes in Lewiston, a Democratic stronghold, as compared to only 167 votes for Nixon. Second District Congressman William D. Hathaway of Auburn managed an even bigger margin over Republican opponent Elden H. Shute Jr. of Farmington, with the incumbent amassing 514 votes to 69 for Shute. 
 
25 Years Ago: 1993 
 
The monthly meeting of the YWCA Evergreen Club will take place Friday from noon to 1 p.m. at the YWCA, 130 East Ave. The program will feature a talk by Mary Beth Gaffey, president of VPS Tours of Auburn, who will speak on travel
tips and adventures. Members should take a bag lunch and dessert and coffee will be provided by the YWCA.
