The Democrats are coming to town at the end of this week for their state convention, which will be held in the Lewiston Colisee. It’s the first time since 1984 that the Democrats have held their convention here. Here’s a look at the schedule highlights. (Everything will take place at the Colisee unless otherwise noted.)
Friday, May 21
1 p.m. – 4 p.m.: “Democracy for America” activist workshops. The progressive, grassroots group founded by Howard Dean will lead free sessions on organization and effective campaigning to all who are interested.
5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m.: Speeches by Maine House Speaker Hannah Pingree, U.S. Reps. Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree, and Gov. John Baldacci.
8 p.m.: Androscoggin County Democratic Committee reception at Museum L-A.
9 p.m.: Hospitality suites held by gubernatorial candidates: Pat McGowan at O’Shea’s Irish Restaurant; Libby Mitchell at Gritty McDuff’s; Steve Rowe at Espo’s Trattoria; Rosa Scarcelli at Holly’s Own Deli.
Saturday, May 22
7 a.m. – 8 a.m.: Women’s leadership breakfast sponsored by Emerge Maine. A panel discussion is scheduled, to feature Maine House Speaker Hannah Pingree and state Reps. Emily Cain, Elsie Fleming and Diane Russell. The event is open to the public.
9 a.m.: Debate and ratification of the 2010 party platform
2 p.m.: Speeches by the gubernatorial candidates: McGowan, Mitchell, Rowe, Scarcelli – though the order of appearance has not been made public.
4 p.m.: Speech by keynote speaker, Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine. Kaine is a former Virginia governor.
