BRUNSWICK — Bowdoin College announced Thursday that football coach JB Wells will not return next season.
Wells took over the program in January 2015 and compiled a 3-31 record over four seasons, including a 1-8 record in 2018. The lone win this past season came against Bates College and snapped a 24-game losing streak by the Polar Bears.
Wells was an assistant coach on the Bates staff from 1994-95.
“The college is grateful for JB’s work in support of our football program and student-athletes, both on and off the field,” Bowdoin director of athletics Tim Ryan said in a news release. “During his four years at Bowdoin, JB engaged deeply with our community and we wish him well as he continues his coaching career in the years ahead.”
Bowdoin said in the news release that it will conduct a national search for a new coach with the help of a search firm.
Wells’ departure means that all three schools in the CBB (Colby-Bates-Bowdoin) rivalry will have changed coaches in the past year. Bates hired Malik Hall last offseason, while Colby hired Jack Cosgrove.
