When the whistle on the County Jail workshop blew at 6:30 Friday morning, none of the workmen came out of their cells and the same condition was in evidence at the noon whistle. The facts of the case were revealed in the statements of the men themselves, who claim that the food they are given is not substantial enough to give proper nourishment. Some even claim that they are too weak to work. The strike was not unexpected by the official at the jail, as the men have expressed much dissatisfaction ever since a new menu went into effect last Sunday.

50 years ago, 1960

Lewiston Health Officer Cecile Levasseur said yesterday she was “disappointed” at the small number of persons who have registered for the adult polio vaccine clinic to be held Wednesday, Aug. 10.

The clinic is being sponsored by the Lewsiton junior Chamber of Commerce, and the vaccine has been donated by the State Department of Health and Welfare.

Mrs. Levasseur said only 10 adults have signed up so far.

25 years ago 1985

Central Maine Medical Center on Monday dedicated its new Family Birthing Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house.

CMMC Nursing Services Director Mary R. Myers and Marcel B. Bilodeau , chairman of the CMMC board of trustees, shared the honor of cutting the pink and white ribbon and officially opened Special Delivery, CMMC’s newly renovated maternity unit.
