GRAY — Police arrested a man Friday after a home was broken into early in the morning while the homeowners were sleeping.

Officials at the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said the couple living at 54 Northern Oaks Drive woke around 2:45 a.m. to find a man standing in their bedroom and holding a flashlight. The homeowners confronted the man, and chased him when he fled.

Police say the man got into a vehicle that was parked close by and drove away. When they returned to the home, the couple noticed many of their belongings had been stacked near the door, ready to be removed.

Sheriff’s deputies found skid marks in the road nearby and evidence that a vehicle had gone off the road before driving away. They said they later found a vehicle that fit a description given by the homeowners, and that the vehicle appeared to have been recently driven and had debris on it from going off the road.

Police say the vehicle’s owner, Ryan P. Fogg, 23, of Gray, was wanted on a burglary and theft warrant from Portland. They found Fogg at 130 Lyons Point Road in Gray. When they ordered him to come out of the home, they said, he refused and barricaded himself inside with his 22-year-old girlfriend, Cara J. Devoid.

Several additional deputies responded to the scene, including the Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services Team Negotiators. After several hours of negotiations, Devoid came out, police say. Just before 7:30 a.m., Fogg surrendered without incident. Detectives say they found items inside the home that connected Fogg to the burglary.

Fogg has an extensive criminal history involving burglaries, theft and drugs, police say. He was taken to the Cumberland County Jail, where he was charged with the original Portland warrant and with a new charge of burglary/theft.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office on Friday sent out a notice reminding people to lock their doors and windows and keep exterior lights on during the night.
