LIVERMORE FALLS — Regional School Unit 73 has announced a snow day makeup plan. Beginning Wednesday, February 13 late arrival Wednesdays will be eliminated through June 5 with school starting at the same time as other weekdays.
The plan was approved at the Jan. 31 board meeting pending its acceptance by the state.
The district has already cancelled school due to the weather six times this year. So far, one day has to be made up.
Acting Superintendent Scott Albert told the board 15 hours or 3 days could be made up by eliminating late arrival Wednesdays. Staff would meet after school for the professional development now obtained Wednesday mornings. The district’s education association is on board with the plan.
“This is the least disruptive for parents. We’re not overwhelming students with long days. We will know by April vacation if more days need to be made up,” Albert said Thursday.
Board member Robert Staples noted last year the board was told eliminating late arrivals wasn’t an option to make up days. He wanted to see approval of the plan in writing.
Albert said late arrival days are considered a regular day for the district. Eliminating the late start would mean a longer day. A similar plan has been cleared in School Administrative District 17.
Board member Joel Pike said, “The key thing is to make sure families and everyone are notified.”
Late Monday, Feb. 4 Albert said a letter about the makeup plan would be sent home with students. The letter is dated Feb. 4.
