AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — As the fall campaign season approaches, the schedule of debates and forums for the candidates for Maine governor is picking up. But who shows up where is turning into something of a debate itself.
Democrat Libby Mitchell says she won’t attend forums sponsored by the Bangor Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Maine Pulp and Paper Association unless they invite all five candidates — and that includes all three independents.
Meanwhile, Republicans are criticizing Mitchell for not taking part in Thursday forums sponsored by Development Alliance, Bangor Metro and Maine Ahead magazines.
On Wednesday night, four of the five candidates did turn out for a forum in Bath sponsored by the Coastal Journal and Times Record newspapers. Republican Paul LePage did not attend.
