The regular meeting of the Lewiston Teachers’ Association, followed by a reception to the new teachers will be held Friday evening in the Jordan High School hall. After the business meeting, there will be a short program consisting of songs by Miss Elizabeth McKenna and readings by Miss Annebelle Bucknam. Refreshments will be served and a social will follow.
50 years ago, 1960
East Avenue and Sabattus Street in Lewiston will be a traffic-controlled intersection next week.
Kerr Electric Co. Inc. has begun the installation of traffic lights at this intersection and they are scheduled to be in operation Monday, reported Police Capt. Joseph H. Farrand, department traffic officer. Lights will regulate traffic from four directions.
25 years ago, 1985
More than 30,000 customers — including television station WCBB — remained without electricity Sunday as Central Maine Power crews continued to repair equipment and lines damaged by Hurricane Gloria, and a company spokesman said they should expect to have their power restored by Monday evening.
About 280 CMP workers have been repairing lines around the clock since Friday. Hurricane Gloria destroyed more than 100 utility poles which must be replaced before power is restored.
