NEW SHARON — An elderly New Sharon man was killed Tuesday morning in front of his house as he was walking across the road, according to the Maine State Police.

Glen Fitch, 87, was killed instantly when struck by a pickup truck driven by Walter Fails, 43 of New Sharon, according to a release issued by Stephen McCausland, the spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Fails was returning home from working as a correctional officer with the Somerset County Jail, according to the release.

Fails, who is also a part-time deputy with the Franklin Sheriff’s Office, was not injured in the accident.

“State Trooper Sam Tlumac said Fitch, who lives alone, had put his recycling out to the curb and then walked across Route 134 shortly before 7:30 a.m.” the release stated.  “Tlumac said as Fitch was returning to his home, he apparently saw the oncoming truck and turned back, but was struck in the roadway. The impact threw Fitch onto the hood of the truck.

According to the release, a team of six troopers investigated the crash a cause has not been determined.

“Two factors being looked into was a mistake on the elderly man’s part and possible glare from the morning sun,” McCausland’s release stated.
