AUBURN — Power was restored to about 2,500 customers after an animal caused a short-circuit at a substation on the Androscoggin River near Deer Rips on Wednesday morning.

Central Maine Power Co. crews switched over knocked out circuits within roughly an hour from the time power went out, said Gail Rice, a power company spokeswoman.

Customers in Lewiston and Auburn and a few in Minot were affected.

Police erected temporary stop signs at major intersections where traffic lights went dark in the Auburn Mall area. Reports of outages at the Fairgrounds business park in Lewiston prompted at least one business to send workers home.
