PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Former Maine GOP Chairman Mark Ellis is throwing his support behind independent Shawn Moody for governor, suggesting Republican Paul LePage may be too conservative.
Ellis, who finished up his stint last year, said he recognizes that voters are angry but warned of “pushing the political pendulum too far in the opposite direction.” He said he believes Moody is best suited to “bridge philosophical differences.”
Without mentioning LePage by name, Ellis said Maine needs a leader “who hasn’t been hardened by the hard knocks of a humble beginning, but one who has been polished by adversity and inspires others.”
That’s an apparent reference to LePage, who was homeless after running away at age 11. He’s now a businessman and mayor of Waterville.
