RUMFORD — Fire crews were battling a blaze late Friday night after flames engulfed a small house along Smith Crossing Road.

A man who lives nearby said the small green house near the railroad tracks has been vacant for a while, but workers had recently been there.

Fire crews were sent out when flames were reported shortly after 8 p.m.

The blaze was said to be located across from 152 Smith Crossing Road, which makes a loop off Route 108.

Lionel Freeman Sr., who lives nearby, said the single-story house was in the area where there used to be a store. He said someone had lived in the house a short time ago, but it was recently vacated.

The quiet neighborhood was rattled when fire crews began responding.

“I was in bed,” Freeman said. “My friend called to tell me the house across the street was on fire.”

He said he could not see flames from his home, but he was told the small house was fully engulfed.

A firefighter who answered the phone at the Rumford fire station at about 9:30 p.m. said he did not know details of the fire. He expected to be called to the scene to help with the effort.
