BANGOR, Maine (AP) — Maine land use regulators have given preliminary approval to a plan to add 11 more wind turbines to the Kibby region of western Maine near the Canadian border.

The Maine Land Use Regulation Commission voted 5-1 in favor of a proposal by TransCanada Maine Wind Development to add the additional turbines to the 44 producing power or under construction on Kibby Mountain and in the Kibby Range.

Commission Director Catherine Carroll tells the Morning Sentinel of Waterville a permit is scheduled for review by the company and commission on Jan. 5, at which time final approval could be considered.

Construction could begin late next year with the first power being generated in 2012.

The turbines would be capable of generating 33 megawatts of electricity.
