BANGOR, Maine (AP) — Heavy snow across northern and eastern Maine has knocked power out to more than 2,000 homes and businesses and closed scores of schools for the day.
The National Weather Service says a winter storm warning is in effect until midnight for the upper half of the state. Forecasters are predicting 4 to 16 inches of snow in most areas Monday, with some places expected to get up to 20 inches.
The snow combined with strong winds is causing hazardous travel conditions.
Bangor Hydro Electric Co. says heavy snow has caused more than 2,000 power outages in Washington County. Businesses, courts and schools, including the University of Maine at Orono, have closed their doors for the day.
Southern Maine is expected to get little if any snow.
