100 Years Ago: 1921
A very successful apron and food sale was held at the Novelty Cloak Store yesterday by the Nurses Social Club for the benefit of the C.M.G. Hospital. The committee for the sale were Mrs. Merton Warren, chairman, assisted by Mrs. Robert Curran and Miss Matilda Alexander. Members of the Alumnae assisted the committee at the sale, where there was a very beautiful display of fancy articles.
50 Years Ago: 1971
Members of the Go Getters Club are going to jail tomorrow. Not for real — they’re not that sort — out to observe and learn about the Androscoggin County Jail system. Members of the club were invited several months ago by Sheriff Robert W. Bonenfant to visit the new facility once completed. Now, the club members are taking him up on the invitation. The club will meet at 7 a.m. at the new jail for coffee and doughnuts. The sheriff will guide the group through the jail and explain its facilities.
25 Years Ago: 1996
Former Secretary of State Edmund S. Muskie was in critical condition Monday after suffering a heart attack while recovering from surgery. The surgery last week to clear a blocked artery in his leg was successful, but Muskie, 81, days later was still at Georgetown University Hospital, said his assistant, Carole Parmelee, of the law firm Chadbourne and Parke. President Clinton was described as very concerned.
