LEWISTON — The Bates College softball team lost both games of a doubleheader in its first games at Lafayette Street Field since April 28, 2019.

St. Joseph’s (4-4) won the opener 6-2 and the second game 6-1.

The Monks ended a scoreless stalemate in first game with a five-run fourth inning, which was aided by three hits and three Bates errors. Lydia Howarth brought in Hannah Gower for the first run with a bases-loaded single.

Caroline Bass and Aleah Pagan, who had two hits, scored unearned runs for the Bobcats (0-4) in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 5-2.

In Game 2, the Monks pulled away with a four-run fifth. Baily Rassol paced the St. Joseph’s offense with three hits, a run and an RBI. Olivia Howe added two hits and a run.
Cassidy Musco had two of Bates’ nine hits, including a double, and scored a run.

BASEBALL
SOUTHERN MAINE 12, MAINE-FARMINGTON 1:  Dylan Hapworth had a pair of home runs to pace a 10-hit attack as the Huskies (8-1) easily handled the visiting Beavers (0-1) at Gorham.

Sam Troiano blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to give Southern Maine an early lead.

After adding a run in the second, the Huskies got solo home runs from Cam Seymour and Hapworth to lengthen their lead to 7-0 after three innings.

Matt Burnett started and went five scoreless innings, walking one and fanning a pair of batters to pick up his first win of the season.

Hunter LaBossiere was 2 for 4 and drove in Maine-Farmington’s lone run.
