The annual fishing derby, sponsored by the Auburn Recreation department with the cooperation of the East Auburn Community Unit, takes place Saturday morning at the Municipal Beach at East Auburn. The state has planted a good quantity of trout in the area off of the beach and a close watch was being kept on the area Friday night by Auburn police and Eugene Keene, the assistant recreation director. The recreation officials did not want a repeat of what happened in some former years when some adults came into the derby area and caught a lot of the newly planted fish. Fishing for the youngsters starts at 8 a.m. and is expected to continue to noon.

More than 50 students, staff and community volunteer entertainers will provide an evening of music at the fourth annual Sherwood Heights School Cabaret in the Auburn school cafeteria Friday at 7 p.m. In the cabaret tradition, spectators and entertainers will sit at tables in the audience with each act going to the stage for their turn. Drinks and Dessert will be served during the program. Under the direction of Becky Skilling, accompanied by Marine Shea, a third-grade chorus will share mystery musical selections with the audience. Linda Roman’s class, under the direction of a volunteer parent, Linda Berube, will lead students in singing songs from the “old days.” Mitch Thomas, well-known area performer, will share his talents and will be the master of ceremonies. Norma Rice Gould will be pianist for most performers.
