Dave Griffiths: Reasoned discourse has become rare
There’s a disappointing predictability about the way letter writers like Jim Benson defend Trump. I appreciate his willingness to put himself out there publicly in favor of our former president. But he says Biden’s policies will destroy America. Which policies? Details matter. He claims in his May 30 letter that we’re headed “to the graveyard […]

Catherine Carey: Lewiston deserves praise for improvement efforts
Congratulations to all of our high school graduates. In reading the article in the May 29 edition about the St. Dominic Academy graduation, and seeing the quotation from the mother of a student, I was very disheartened by the derogatory comment about Lewiston. Sadly the reporter felt that should be shared. Lewiston is to be […]

Rich Lowry: Yes, Democrats should fear the crime wave
Black Lives Matter has already been losing support in the polls, while trust in the police has been rising. Things would have to get much worse for crime to become as central an issue as it was in the 1970s. Dee Dumais: Murphy much deserving of tennis court name
What a wonderful tribute to Anita Murphy and her dedication to the lady Blue Devils girls tennis teams, and also her mentorship in the youth programs (“Lewiston High School tennis courts to bear coach Anita Murphy’s name,” May 25). A big thank you to Lewiston High School Athletic Director Jason Fuller, who promoted the honor, […]

Dr. Said Mohamud: Tyranny in Somalia must come to an end
The Somali people hope that U.S.-educated people are strengths of their nascent democracy, but never thought about struggling to fight for their rights and freedoms against a new dictator who was educated and once lived in the United States.

In rebuttal: Joel Goodman: Gilbert wrong about apartheid in Israel
In his letter (“U.S. needs to stop aiding ‘warmongers of Israel,’” May 27), Larry Gilbert Sr. appears to have accepted the Palestinian story that turns the aggressor into the victim. When Hamas decided to shoot thousands of missiles into Israel it knew that Israel would either sit by quietly or respond. And respond Israel did. […]
