Matthew Roy: NECEC ‘critical’ for economy, infrastructure
The New England Clean Energy Connect is critical to Lewiston and Maine, and our future. One thing that can’t be denied is that Lewiston benefits from the NECEC. For the power to get to the rest of New England, it must come through Lewiston first. That will require a $200 million substation upgrade that will […]

Bob Neal: The Countryman: The most important minority in America
Time was, and not so long ago, that “political moderate” and “white middle class” were almost interchangeable. That may no longer be true as more and more whites push to the fringes of left and right.

Andrew Tasker: GOP on ‘wrong side of history’
Everything the GOP stands for is rooted in religiously-based prejudice of some sort. Its members learned that basing their arguments on a Christian doctrine is a winning strategy, because Americans have been schooled in conservative logic that teaches the Bible supports the Right Wing. Whether they are denying the rights of women, the poor and […]

Paul Fielding: ‘Wait your turn’ for COVID vaccine
The Sun Journal reported March 18 (“One-shot Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine in short supply in Maine“) on how a 67-year-old woman could not get the vaccination she needed, because that type of vaccine is reserved only for teachers. Democrats do not want to take our guns away. They want to stop mass shootings and senseless killing through regulations, registrations and some restrictions. Republicans […]

Leonard Pitts Jr.: A model of policing we too seldom get to see
Faced with a distraught and abusive man, they resorted, not to force, but to compassion. We’ll be a better nation when that becomes the norm. And not the news.

Robert Limoges: Second Amendment needs 21st century eyes
The U.S. Constitution is often described as a “living document.” Changes to the Constitution have occurred as society has evolved — ending slavery, allowing women to vote, prohibition and its reversal. Yet no one has touched the Second Amendment since it was written, even though society and technology has changed. The right to bear arms […]

Silver Moore-Leamon: The difference in the details
When Jared Golden votes differently from the majority of Democrats, I make it a point to read his complete explanation carefully. Though I may not agree with the decision he comes to, I have always understood his reasoning and respected his stand. The Republican Party has made it clear that it demands unthinking party loyalty […]
