Sarah Russell: For Lewiston, for our kids. Vote
The slaughtering of innocent people using military-style weapons that we have witnessed for decades throughout this country has come to Maine. It is visceral, real and terrifying. We blame the politicians for not doing anything to protect our community from guns, but we are the ones who voted those politicians into office. We are a […]

Randall Tate: God bless departed, survivors and all who love them
I just want to express my sincere sympathies to all that have been directly impacted by the horrible assassinations at the pub and bowling alley in Lewiston. It’s so shocking, and so senseless. God bless the departed and the survivors, and all who love them. Randall Tate, Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Deborah Harris: Offering my sincere condolences
After learning of the tragic shootings in Lewiston I felt I needed to reach out to you and offer my sincere condolences. The losses your community has sustained, and some of you individually, affects not only you, but every citizen in the United States on many levels. Please know that even though you may not […]

Sarah Mikesell Growney: Here we are, in America, no longer free
Everyday I sent my children to school in Cody, Wyoming, I was afraid. With the proliferation of gun violence in the nation, and the fact that here in the Wild West, most, if not all, are gun-owners. Between the hunting , cowboy, and the “don’t tread on me” cultures, guns are everywhere in Wyoming. We […]

Rick McIlveen: Politics and lobbyists can’t drive live-saving decisions
In an emotional presentation, Jared Golden indicated that he was changing his position on assault weapons and would work with any colleague to ban them. It was a stunning announcement, and, he admitted, the result of the impact of the mass murder in his home town. It was apparent that he had done some “soul […]

Suzanne Tarlin: Does anyone actually want to have these tough discussions?
In or about 1961, as a member of Lewiston High School’s debating team, I took part in a tournament at Dartmouth College. We were driving home after the event. I was sitting in the back seat of our teacher’s car when a bullet entered a side window and left through the rear windscreen passing by […]

John Cobarruvias: Don’t be like Texas. Don’t forget.
My heart hurts for those affected by the recent mass shootings taking the lives of 18 individuals and affecting the families and the community. As someone from Texas, a state with a history of mass shootings, I want to assure you that things will get better. Here in Texas most Texans quickly forgot about the […]

Jason Parks: Support community minded candidates in Lewiston
Following years of bullying, forcing personal agendas, and disregarding the needs of Lewiston citizens, voters are getting to see the true colors of some of our city councilors. Whether it’s Rick LaChapelle slinging insults at audience members, Robert McCarthy yelling to the point of turning red-in-the-face, or Lee Clement’s condescending dismissal of anyone he disagrees […]

Here we go again — another gravel pit zoning change. The Auburn Planning Board, mayor and council are once again considering changing the zoning district in a portion of the gravel pits on Gracelawn Road from Agriculture and Resource Protection to a commercial zone that permits many commercial uses as well as some forms of […]
