BRIDGTON — During a typical Tuesday at the Bridgton Food Pantry as many as 90 families receive food collected by this all volunteer organization.
Deb Davenport, food pantry director, and Diana Whitehouse, pantry board member, order, salvage and purchase food and supplies to meet this weekly challenge, supervising a group of active volunteers to get the work done.
The BFP, which is an outreach program of the Bridgton United Methodist Church, operates out of the church at 214 Main St. under the governance of an independent board of directors. People seeking help usually arrive between 10:30 and 10:45 a.m., and the food is usually gone by noon. In addition to food, the pantry distributes coffee, paper goods and personal hygiene items.
As people start to think about seasonal giving, Davenport asks that they consider sending a check to the Bridgton Food Pantry. All donations, including purchased items, are gratefully accepted.
However, since the BFP is able to purchase food at 16 cents per pound, pantry officials ask that before a donor purchases a can of something for $1.29, that they consider how many pounds of food can be purchased if the BFP spent that $1.29 instead.
All financial donations go directly toward the purchase of food. To make a donation, sent a check payable to “Bridgton Food Pantry” to PO Box 207, Bridgton, ME 04009. Donations are tax deductible.
