NORWAY — After 37 years serving clients in Norway and the surrounding region, Ed Damon closed his accounting business Sept. 14 as he begins his retirement.

Damon was born and raised in Norway, one of two children to Edgar Damon Sr. and Beverly (Herrick) Damon of Norway. He attended local schools and graduated from Oxford Hills High School in 1973. Later he received a bachelor’s degree with honors from the University of Maine at Augusta, majoring in accounting.
He worked extensively in banking, manufacturing and nonprofit organizations in Norway, Oxford and Mechanic Falls. He was working for a local manufacturing company as the controller when he decided to work for himself, helping local businesses with bookkeeping and payroll.
“My wife and I discussed staying local or moving to where we could make more money and decided we wanted to bring up our son, Christopher, here in Oxford Hills, for a better quality of life. I saw an opportunity for business and nonprofit bookkeeping, which led to payroll and tax preparation services,” Damon said.
He established his Damon Accounting P.A. in 1989 above his father’s barbershop. His “goal was to establish friendly, caring relationships while providing the highest level of personalized client services possible.”
Damon served individuals, corporations, partnerships and nonprofits, doing bookkeeping, tax preparation and planning, financial consulting and representation before IRS and Maine tax authorities.
“What kept me in this work for all these years was the reward of helping people,” he said. “I’ve kept overhead low and passed on that savings with lower rates, helping clients in need.”
He is looking forward to a retirement filled with time with his wife, Louise, traveling, more time at camp, biking, kayaking and long walks. His mother, Beverly, is in long-term care and he hopes to visit her more frequently without the pressures of work.
Damon gave credit to his wife for helping with his success.
“Most years she worked in the office, as well as doing everything that a family needs done at home, while I was working extended hours during tax season,” he said, adding thanks to his clients. “Thank you for the opportunity to work with you.”
