FARMINGTON — Farmington Public Library has launched a garden seed exchange program aimed at helping local residents grow food, support plant biodiversity and build community interest in gardening.
The library is collecting still-viable vegetable, herb and flower seeds in their original packaging this fall, with plans to distribute the donated seeds free to local library cardholders next spring.
Seed collection boxes are available at Farmington Public Library, Root Down Market in New Sharon and the Franklin County Cooperative Extension office at 138 Pleasant St. in Farmington.
Organizers hope gardeners who receive seeds will donate leftover seeds after the next growing season, creating an ongoing community exchange.
“This community seed exchange program is designed to promote sustainable gardening, foster local food resilience and preserve plant biodiversity,” program coordinator Patti Millette said. “In this time of constantly rising food prices and the scarcity of less processed food, it has become more important than ever to consider growing your own food.”
The program was funded by the Greater Franklin County Food Council.
