FARMINGTON — The University of Maine at Farmington will host filmmaker and actor Samuel Dunning for a screening of his 2025 mockumentary “Canoe Dig It?” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Emery Community Arts Center.
The free screening, part of UMF’s fall Visiting Writers series, will be followed by a question-and-answer session with Dunning. The Maine native wrote, directed and stars in the film, which follows competitive freestyle canoeists traveling to northern Maine in pursuit of the title of “Top Paddler.”
“Canoe Dig It?” premiered at the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, California, and has since continued on the film festival circuit.
Dunning, originally from Brunswick, divides his time between the East and West coasts as a filmmaker, actor and model. He graduated from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts with a bachelor of fine arts degree in film production and direction.
His previous work includes the 2019 horror comedy short “Rick and Ruby,” which won awards at several film festivals, including Sitges Film Festival, Screamfest and Dead by Dawn. Dunning also has received a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Nevermore Film Festival.
The Visiting Writers series is sponsored by UMF’s Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program.
