Grayling Cunningham repaints his fire hydrant into a cartoon cat Saturday as part of an Earth Day activity in Lewiston. He had painted the same hydrant as a dog previously. “The dog made everyone happy because it was so goofy,” Grayling says, “so I decided to stick with an animal.” The artists were invited to paint the hydrants by Wicked Illustrations, the sponsor of the event. All artists donated their own time and materials for the project. Andree Kehn/Sun Journal
Deb Davis retouches a gnome-themed fire hydrant she originally painted three years ago as part of a citywide beautification project. Area artists were invited to paint Lewiston hydrants Saturday as part of an Earth Day activity sponsored by Wicked Illustrations. All artists donated their own time and materials for the project. Davis, who says she is “retired, reinvented and happily self-employed” uses glitter and glow-in-the-dark paint on her hydrant on Pine Street. Andree Kehn/Sun Journal

Melanie Therrien paints a wildflower scene on a fire hydrant Saturday at the corner of Lisbon and Chestnut streets as a part of an Earth Day activity. Artists were invited to paint the Lewiston hydrants by Therrien’s studio, Wicked Illustrations, the event sponsor. All artists donated their own time and materials for the project. Therrien chose the wildflower theme, which she says is “wild and beautiful — just like Lewiston.” Andree Kehn/Sun Journal
