PORTLAND (AP) — Maine and Portland health inspectors are randomly checking the temperature of food being transported by ferry to Casco Bay’s islands, after an official noticed food that was supposed to be refrigerated sitting on a city dock.
Officials say there have been no reports of people getting sick. Health authorities have notified distribution companies, which have taken a number of actions including adding more ice and insulation to food deliveries.
The Press Herald reported (http://bit.ly/1ui20kZ ) that after a city inspector noticed food sitting on a dock in Portland last month, city officials alerted the state about what they called a potentially significant food safety hazard.
Casco Bay Lines has responded to concerns by moving food shipments inside its building to cooler places and turning away delivery trucks arriving at odd hours.
