Cal Thomas: Barn doors and horses
After months of ignoring the problem and demonstrably false claims by his Homeland Security secretary that the southern border is “secure,” President Biden finally visited the area this week as part of a trip to Mexico.

Froma Harrop: Biden’s border policies: Better but not good enough
The problem isn’t just the policies themselves, which are a mixed bag. It’s the messaging. It’s the air of apology when he does something real to stop illegal border crossing. He seems afraid to displease some progressives in his party who think anyone poor should get in.

Mark Cayer: Mayor Sheline deserves Lewiston residents’ support
I write to share thoughts on the recent attempt by some Lewiston city councilors to change the council rules. The change would place limits on current Mayor Carl Sheline’s ability to debate and express his views. It appears some councilors’ feelings may have been hurt. In response to this and under the cloak of darkness, […]

Paul Poliquin: Let the mayor speak
As a former city councilor and council president for 10 years, I served with four mayors. They were Alfred Plourde, Maurice Labbe, Jim Howaneic and John Jenkins. All were great mayors. I always wanted to know what the mayors thought on any agenda item facing Lewiston and its residents. All four mayors spoke out on […]

Barbara Shapiro: Don’t risk harming Lake Auburn by developing it
I write about the latest ruling on Lake Auburn‘s new watershed boundaries and better septic system rules. Though septic systems should be made as effective as possible near the lake, runoff from development in the watershed would be more harmful. Better land use is most effective in protecting the lake’s clean water. There seems to […]

Frank Earley: Scam calls need to be regulated
I wonder why there is no regulation concerning scam calls. I’m disabled, so I’m home most of the time. On an average day I receive five to seven scam calls per day. My favorite one is the call I receive from my friendly Microsoft company repair person or my television company representatives. Both sound like […]

Joe Voisine: Americans must maintain savings for retirement
The Biden Administration is playing politics with people’s 401(k) plans. They shouldn’t rely on Social Security for retirement, either. The golden years that they saved for — retirement — may have to be put on hold. Under Joe Biden, watch inflation cost the average family over $5,000 more a year. The overriding concern is, at […]

Rep. Laurel Libby: Once again, no real long-term solutions to be found in Augusta
Keep an eye on your mailbox, where you can expect to see an upbeat letter from Gov. Mills arrive with your check, but no talk of real change. Mainers can count on more of the same, which means your costs will continue to increase while your elected representatives pat themselves on the back for sending you a $450 check.
