Maura Murphy: Lewiston needs McLean, LaChapelle, McCarthy
As a lifelong Democrat, it has been disheartening to watch the heart of Lewiston descend into a state of unpredictable danger, street crime and degradation. Those who look at the voting records of most of Lewiston’s state lawmakers — starting with crime and drugs — will see that many of the proposals they have supported […]

Froma Harrop: A MAGA secession could possibly work
There’s the Plan B: Divide the country into two parts, one a sane democracy, the other the People’s Republic of MAGAland. Some fancy boundary drawings would be required. Austin, for example, is Biden country surrounded by Texas. And Arizona is a real mix.

Cal Thomas: She’s winsome, but also tough
The former Marine and Jamaican immigrant (she says her father arrived in America with $1.75 in his pocket) is now the second most powerful office holder in the state and the first female lieutenant governor. Winsome Sears can charm when necessary, but her boldness in discussing controversial issues reveals a backbone other Republicans should emulate.

Rich Lowry: Republicans can’t run and hide on abortion
The Republican Party only had about a half-century to prepare for the end of Roe v. Wade, yet is still scared and confused now that the late, unlamented decision is no longer with us.

Bruce and Louise Geoffroy: ‘Gotcha’ politics eclipse issues in elections
Trackers have become the paparazzi of Maine politics. Generally hired by political parties, they follow and put cameras into the faces of opposing candidates in the hope of capturing (or sometimes provoking) so-called “gotcha” moments. Statewide candidates, like Paul LePage, are obvious targets for trackers, but this is even taking place now in local legislative […]

Clem Bechard: Wrestling show demonstrates worsening TV violence
I was watching Friday Night SmackDown, a popular wrestling show. It used to be watchable, but now it’s a lesson in how to gang up on a person. The bad thing about it is it’s so popular, as it’s on three or four times a week. It’s a really good lesson for our kids, isn’t […]

In rebuttal: William LaRochelle: Trump puts himself, not America, first
This is in reply to Deborah Diltz’s letter, “Letter’s insults, attacks on Trump ‘unworthy of publication’” (Aug. 28), in which she denigrated Norm Gellatly for his letter of Aug. 13. Insults and attacks? Could she honestly free Donald Trump of the charge? Trump, the one-time “leader of the free world” whose insults and attacks on […]

Langston Snodgrass: Rep. Craven works hard for her constituents
Margaret Craven is running for re-election to the Maine Legislature in Lewiston’s new House District 93, which runs from Sabattus to the north, west of Central Avenue. She deserves to be re-elected. Margaret has committed a large part of her life to her work in the Legislature, to Lewiston’s community life, to our well-being. Margaret […]

Deanne Danforth: LePage ‘blatantly vulgar, angry and bombastic’
Former Gov. Paul LePage’s outlandish behavior made national news. He said out-of-state drug dealers with names like “D-Money” impregnate young white girls. Told students reading newspapers in Maine is “like paying somebody to tell you lies.” Said he makes up stories to mislead the media. Fake news comes from him. How do we know when […]
